Beginning the long, slow trek home...

We've officially concluded our teaching time, and we are making the long trip home. There are a couple of legs to this trip home,  So far, we've already made our way from the island of Timor to the city of Denpasar, on the island of Bali:

Airline: Lion Air (Another new airline!

Aircraft: Boeing 737-800
Distance: about 600 miles
Time: about 2 hours
Total distance flown: 12,237 miles

Here's a link to the map:

Tomorrow, the real travel time begins.

This leg will be the longest day of travel yet -- and will involve two "nights" but it will only feel like a half a day of travel. Let me explain...

Leg one will launch from Bali, to Sydney. This is a red-eye flight, leaving Friday night:
Airline: Jetstar
Aircraft: Boeing 787
Distance: about 3000 miles
Time: 5 hours, 40 minutes.

Here's where it gets confusing. Leg two leaves Saturday morning, Australia time, but Friday evening America time. So, we are running away from the sunset. That means that this flight too ends up as an overnight flight, arriving Saturday morning US time. In fact, I'll actually arrive a few hours before I even left -- go figure.

Airline: Qantas
Aircraft: Airbus 380 -- and this is the one I'm most looking forward to flying on!!
Distance: about 8,000 miles
Time: 13 hours, 40 minutes.

The sprint for the finish line will happen Saturday late morning, flying from Los Angeles to Portland, where I am looking forward to a very happy reunion.
Airline: Alaska Airlines
Aircraft: Boeing 737
Distance: About 800 miles
Time: about 2 hours.

Here's what this leg of the trip will look like.

For a total distance flown this whole trip of: 24,000 miles. Almost the circumference of the globe!
Here's what the whole flight looks like.
