The Next Leg of the Trip

Well, today we head out for the next leg of our trip. We'll fly from Vijayawada to Delhi, with a stopover in Hyderbad, and then from Delhi, to Singapore. This will include a 3.5 hour layover, which I actually wish were longer; Singapore is the world's nicest airport, and I wish I had more time to explore. There is a pool, a movie theatre, butterfly gardens, as well as restaurants, and the usual airport stuff.

From Singapore, we fly to Denpasar, Indonesia -- a tourist location for many. We'll be staying at a simple hotel there and we plan to enjoy a day and a half of rest and relaxation. Here's the airline/aircraft breakdown:

Vijayawada -> Delhi: Air India, Airbus 319
Delhi -> Singapore: Air India, Boeing 787 (A new one for me -- looking forward to flying this one!)
Singapore -> Denpasar: Jetstar Asia, Airbus 39.

The Last Two Weeks Here In Salem

Our last weeks of the summer were a time of recovering from our trip to Michigan as well as squeezing those last minute outings in before school began.  We came home the day before the solar eclipse (August 19th). After we enjoyed full totality and experiencing all the hype and excitement on the 20th--we crashed into a time of fatigue and exhaustion.  Rob was still on the other side of the world until that Saturday the 26th.  I never sleep well when he is out of town and I was jet lagged from travel.  I was getting up multiple times in the night and not getting good rest. Pastor Wife on Sabbatical (Amy's perspective)

What is a sabbatical for pastors?  According to our denomination (the Christian Reformed Church) it is this:  A sabbatical is a change or a break from the normal routine. It’s an opportunity to step back, reflect, relax, recharge, and renew. Why sabbaticals for pastors?  Because pastor burn out is very real.  Consider these statistics also from our denominational website: 1,600 pastors quit or resign from their jobs every month Nearly 20 percent of pastors suffer stress or burnout 50 percent of pastors become divorced I was a pastor's kid (i.e. PK) in the 1980's and 1990's.  This was during a time period when sabbaticals were not common.  I daresay if they were the norm, more pastors might have stayed at their churches beyond the five year mark.  Many moved on to avoid burnout.  For some churches, it might have been necessary and brought new growth for that particular congregation.  Other churches, pastors, pastor wives, and pastor kids may have benefited fro

Sights and Sounds of India

Vijayawada, India, is a city of two million people, and the capital of India's Andrha Pradesh state. It's located on the Krishna River, and it's a rapidly-developing city, as the state capital was recently relocated here, from the nearby city of Hyderabad. It's also been my home base for the past week or so.   It's difficult -- impossible, really -- to put into words what it's like to experience a city like this. That's true any time you visit another culture, actually; words can paint a pretty good picture, but words don't capture the sounds and the sights that you meet the moment you set foot on new soil. As Westerners, we have an unfortunate habit of focusing on the negatives that we see. We might, for example, shake our heads at the poverty that we see, and wonder to ourselves how people could live in such conditions.
