Summer Reading

I read twenty five books in 2017 as of today--twelve this summer.  Rob has me beat as he read seventeen.  However I am finding he can breeze through a non-fiction in a couple days whereas it might take me a week and a half...or longer.

I pushed myself to read more fiction than nonfiction.  I naturally gravitate towards nonfiction.  I started a Book Club last December.  This has helped me read books I might normally bypass.

My older two have competed in the Oregon Battle of the Books competitions in March.  Last year they both made it to the quarter finals with their team members.  I told them I would try to read as many of the OBOB books as I can...so far I am only at three. But I do have seven more months.

When it comes to non-fiction my "geeky interests" are the city of Chicago...the Chicago Housing Authority and racial segregation and reconciliation in particular.  I also enjoy reading about The Vietnam War in both nonfiction memoirs and fiction books based on facts.  I still read non-fiction books about running...although not nearly as many.  I am finding they all start to sound the same and I would rather skim articles on the Runners World Facebook page.

So here is my summer reading list.  My favorites?  Hoot by Carl Hiassen was a fun read.  I enjoyed Shades of White Flight though it was not a quick and easy read.  However, it painted a clearer picture of the kind of Chicago my Dutch ancestors immigrated to and the types of communities my grandparents and parents grew up in.

1) A Tapestry of Secrets by Sarah Loudin Thomas
2) 1984 by George Orwell by George Orwell (read for Book Club)

5) Hoot by Carl Hiassen (read for OBOB)
6) The Gate by Dann A Stouten
